The Beauharnois wastewater treatment plant, which operates on the activated sludge principle, was the focus of a major project to upgrade it and bring it up to standard. This initiative was very important for the City, which had to be able to respond to the rapid growth and development generated by the extension of Highway 30 in recent years.
Based on population growth forecasts and to correct operational shortcomings in existing facilities, our teams carried out an upgrade study that included a detailed audit of the facilities, evaluation of options for increasing capacity, and estimates of construction and operating costs.
Our team proposed an innovative solution by converting the oxidation ditches into piston flow reactors, enabling more efficient wastewater treatment. This approach enabled the treatment plant to be enlarged internally, without increasing its footprint – a major challenge given the limited space on site. As a result, the plant’s capacity was considerably increased, producing a high-quality effluent that complies with all current standards.
