What is pyrrhotite

Pyrrhotite is a sulphurous stone that is present mainly in the Mauricie region which strongly reacts to humidity, air and oxygen. The oxidation reaction of this extremely harmful granulate causes an expansion within the concrete creating large cracks to foundations and other concrete structures.

At times, the chemical reaction of pyrrhotite is so quick and significant that in certain situations there is a risk of foundations collapsing within a short amount of time.

In order to determine the presence of pyrrhotite and to specify the reactivity potential of the aggregates contained in the concrete, measurements of the total amount of sulphur contained in the aggregates, combined with a reflected light stereomicroscope analysis, must be performed in the laboratory.

  • Carrying out a visual inspection of the visible concrete elements with characterization of the current damage (cracks, damage, conditions, etc.)
  • Sampling of concrete cores at concrete structures
  • Laboratory chemical analyses of the sulphur content in aggregates
  • Preparation of polished plates and analysis with a reflected light stereomicroscope to visualize damage and detect the presence of pyrrhotite
  • Drafting of an expert report with conclusions and recommendations

The Mauricie region has a geology characterized by the presence of pyrrhotite, which has one of the highest concentrations in Canada. Pyrrhotite problems cause irreversible damage to concrete foundations, leading to major repairs that are very costly. A grant program for pyrrhotite-damaged homes in the City of Trois-Rivières was created to provide financial assistance to homeowners.
